A devastating fire burned through an apartment building on the 20th block of 3rd Street in Everett Borough Friday evening. Multiple crews were on site, but no injuries were reported.
Everett Fire Company’s fire chief, Thomas J. Stone told us in a statement that fire companies from Everett, Bedford, Breezewood, and Roaring Spring were on scene as well as an ambulance from Raystown. The apartment building itself consists of 6 units which sustained smoke and water damage from the fire. One unit more than others.
One local resident witnessed the fire as it unfolded right in front of his home.
“Around 6 o ‘clock I saw the fire department pull up and I started filming," said Jerry Revis. "I saw the smoke coming out and they had all the people clear out so they can do their job. It was mostly smoke coming out of the building right here, it all came out in one puff. The fire department went in and they controlled it probably within 30 minutes to 45 minutes it was under control.”
Fire Chief Stone explained that crews were on scene for approximately 3 hours. Currently the building is closed off with yellow caution tape and the Red Cross offered assistance to those families that are displaced.
“Our teams responded and provided resources and assistance to a total of 6 adults that were affected or otherwise displaced due to the fire in multiple units," said Lisa Landis, Regional Director of Marketing and Communications Red Cross. “Our teams will continue to work with these individuals in the days and weeks to come to help them recover and navigate the process of securing new homes, connecting with community resources and finding what that new normal looks like.”
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but the state police fire Marshall is investigating.
